Frequently Asked Questions

Expert knowledge on CNC machining and precision manufacturing

General Information

What is CNC contract machining?
CNC contract machining is outsourced precision manufacturing. You provide drawings and specifications, and we manufacture the parts using CNC machines. We handle everything from design verification, tooling selection, production, quality control, and delivery. Contract machining is ideal for companies that need precision parts but do not have in-house machining capacity or expertise.
Who is CNC contract machining at Atlas MBD suitable for?
Contract machining is suitable for any manufacturer that requires precision metal parts. This includes OEMs (original equipment manufacturers), automotive suppliers, hydraulic component manufacturers, medical device companies, mechanical engineers, and tool makers. Whether you need single prototypes or series production of thousands, contract machining provides flexibility without the capital investment of owning machines.
What batch sizes do you manufacture?
We manufacture everything from single prototypes to series of thousands of pieces. Our flexible production capability means we can accommodate any batch size. Whether you need one-off prototype parts, small batches of 10-50 pieces, or series production of 1000+, we have the capacity and expertise to support your requirement.
How long are your lead times?
Lead times depend on part complexity, batch size, and current capacity. Typically, prototypes can be delivered within 2-3 weeks, and series production within 3-6 weeks. For each enquiry, we provide a confirmed delivery date in the quotation. We treat delivery schedules as commitments and maintain a reliable track record with our customers.
Do you deliver to Germany and Austria?
Yes, the majority of our customers are based in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. We have established reliable EU logistics and regularly deliver to DACH markets with confirmed lead times. We understand the specific quality and delivery requirements of German and Austrian manufacturers.

Machining and Tolerances

What tolerances do you achieve in CNC turning?
We routinely achieve tolerances of IT7 to IT8 on diameters and IT6 to IT7 on length dimensions without additional finishing. Tighter tolerances (IT5 and below) are achievable through secondary operations such as grinding. The specific tolerance depends on part geometry, material, and required surface finish.
What tolerances do you achieve in CNC milling?
We achieve tolerances of IT7 to IT8 on standard milled surfaces and IT6 to IT7 on critical dimensions. Through secondary finishing operations like grinding, we can achieve IT5 and tighter tolerances. Tolerance capability depends on part complexity, material, and design geometry.
What surface finish do you achieve in grinding?
Grinding allows us to achieve surface finishes from Ra 0.8 micrometres down to Ra 0.1 micrometres depending on material and grinding wheel selection. Most industrial applications are satisfied with Ra 0.4 to Ra 0.8 micrometres. We select the appropriate grinding method and wheel specification for your material and application.
Can you manufacture prototypes and one-off parts?
Yes, absolutely. Prototyping is an important part of our business. We approach single parts and prototypes with the same precision and care as series production. We welcome design verification projects, prototype development, and small-batch orders.
Do you carry out all processes in your own facility?
Yes, all six processes - CNC turning, CNC milling, grinding, welding, heat treatment, and laser engraving - are carried out in-house. We do not outsource any production steps. This ensures consistent quality control, faster delivery, and a single point of contact for your project.

Materials

What materials do you work with?
We work with a comprehensive range of materials including carbon steel (S235, S355, C45), alloy steel (42CrMo4, 34CrMo4), stainless steel (1.4301, 1.4305, 1.4404), aluminium alloys, brass, copper, titanium, and engineering plastics. If you have a specific material in mind, please mention it in your enquiry.
Can you machine hardened steel?
Yes, we can machine hardened steel, both through turning and milling. After heat treatment hardening, grinding is typically required to achieve tight tolerances and good surface finish. Because heat treatment and grinding are both in-house, we can handle hardened components efficiently.
Do you work with aluminium?
Yes, we regularly machine aluminium alloys. Aluminium requires different cutting strategies, feeds, and speeds compared to steel, but our equipment and experience allow us to achieve tight tolerances and excellent surface finishes on aluminium components.
What is the largest part size you can accommodate?
Our milling equipment can accommodate parts up to approximately 400 x 300 x 250 mm. For turning, we can handle parts up to approximately 150 mm diameter and 300 mm length. For larger components, we can sometimes arrange special fixturing or break projects into sections. Please discuss your size requirements when enquiring.

Delivery and Logistics

How do you handle delivery to Germany and Austria?
We have established reliable EU logistics for delivery to German and Austrian customers. Parts are packed and shipped according to your requirements. We provide tracking information and confirm delivery. Most deliveries to DACH countries are completed within 3-5 working days of dispatch.
What packaging standards do you use?
Parts are carefully packaged to protect them during transport. We use appropriate packaging materials depending on part sensitivity, surface finish, and customer requirements. If you have specific packaging standards or requirements, please mention them in your enquiry.
Can you supply documentation with parts (material certificates, inspection reports)?
Yes, upon request we provide material certificates from suppliers confirming material grade and composition, and inspection reports documenting dimensions and surface finishes. Additional documentation such as heat treatment certificates or test reports can be provided if required. Please specify your documentation requirements when requesting a quotation.

Enquiries and Collaboration

How does an enquiry work?
Send your drawings and specifications to mario@atlasmbd-cnc.hr or mihael@atlasmbd-cnc.hr. We review your requirements, assess the manufacturing process, and respond within 24 hours with a quotation including price and delivery schedule. If we need clarification on your specification, we contact you immediately.
What do you need to prepare a quotation?
We need a drawing (2D or 3D, CAD file preferred) showing all dimensions, tolerances, and surface finish requirements. If applicable, include material specification, batch size, and any special requirements or preferences. The more detailed your specification, the more accurate our quotation.
How quickly will we receive a quotation?
We aim to respond within 24 hours of receipt of your enquiry. For standard parts and standard materials, quotations are usually provided the same day or next morning. For complex parts or special requirements, we may need 24-48 hours for a thorough assessment.
What file formats do you accept for drawings?
We accept STEP, IGES, DWG, PDF, and other standard CAD formats. If you have a specific file format, please send it, and if we cannot read it, we will ask for an alternative. 2D drawings are also acceptable, as long as they contain complete dimension and tolerance information.
What languages do you communicate in?
We communicate in English, German, and Croatian. Most of our customers are German speakers, and our team is fluent in German. If you prefer English communication, that is equally welcome. Please specify your preferred language when contacting us.
